Every year I have the honor of illustrating the cover image and supplementary feature illustrations for the Texas Scientist magazine. In 2021 the feature story was about how different species "court" one another, sometimes in ways that seem more antagonistic than romantic. To represent these different species in a consistent way (and avoid any imagery that would show animals fighting OR mating), I created grainy illustrations that have the feel of a vintage science textbook, and overlaid them with ven diagrams to represent the couples union.
